What is Hair?

A skin appendage that protects the scalp is a protein-based filament that grows from hair follicles. It primarily comprises dead, keratinized cells and is divided into Cuticle, Cortex, and Medulla layers. However, Medulla is not found in everyone’s hair but in thick, curly, and Kinki hair types.

What is Hair Loss?

As new hair cells are produced at the hair bulb, old cells are pushed out through the skin’s surface about six inches a year. 50-100 hair falls daily are average. This is called a natural occurrence. But when the quantity of hair falls increases and comparatively new hair growth decreases, your hair is thinning, called Hair fall.

Stages of Hair Loss

According to Norwood Hamilton’s scale, there are seven stages of hair loss…

Types of Hair Loss

A natural condition in which the hair gradually thins with age. It occurs in people aged 50 with no history or evidence of hereditary baldness.

Androgenic Alopecia.jpg__PID:80f680ed-e2fb-4714-8397-e06e464f92a3

Scarring Alopecia

An inflammatory condition that destroys and damages hair follicles, causing scarring and permanent hair loss due to health conditions, burns, and tight ponytails or braids.

Telogen Effluvium.jpg__PID:e2fbe714-c397-406e-864f-92a3d4e29e01

Telogen Effluvium

It is temporary hair thinning caused by disruptions in the hair growth cycle in the telogen (resting) phase. This happens after significant physical or emotional stress, illness, or hormonal changes.

 Causes of Hair Loss

  • Hormones: Various hormones highly affect the hair cycle and the structure of the hair follicle. Excess androgens, or male sex hormones, and hormonal imbalances are the most common causes of hair loss, such as androgenetic alopecia. Androgens play a role in female and male pattern baldness.
  • Genetics: Genetic concerns of the maternal and paternal family can encourage hair loss, which is unfortunately irreversible.
  • Childbirth: Hair falls in women after childbirth are expected due to low hormonal levels. But it can be reversed.
  • Stress: It encourages the release of cortisol into the body and has been proven to harm the hair follicle's formation mechanism.
  • Long-term illness and medication: Drug-induced hair loss occurs when the main mechanisms of the normal hair growth cycle are stopped. Examples include chemotherapy, blood thinners, thyroid and lung diseases, and anemia. Stopping drugs improves hair loss.
  • Autoimmune Diseases: Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease. It occurs when the immune system attacks the hair follicles.
  • Diet: Healthy skin and hair depend primarily on an adequate and balanced diet. Sometimes, a bad, low-micronutrient diet can cause hair loss. Ensure a well-balanced diet so hair care efforts are not wasted.
  • Heat & Chemically Damage: Excessive use of heat styling tools and Chemical treatments can weaken hair, making it more prone to breakage and loss. But minimizing their use reverses healthy hair.
  • Weather: Season change can indirectly cause temporary hair loss. Dry, cold, and humid weather makes hair dry, damaged, prone to breakage, and frizzy, potentially leading to hair loss.

Haircare Regime for Reducing Hair Fall Problems

  • Essential Haircare Regime:

Wash hair 2-3 times a week with a mild shampoo enriched with natural ingredients, according to hair type, to remove dirt and excess oil.

Detangling.jpg__PID:5354cfce-7345-4d50-81d8-bb4346a1ce49

Detangling is essential to stopping breakage, split ends, and frizziness. A wooden Comb protects hair loss from static energy created during combing. A soft bristle hairbrush, detangling serum, and spray are also preferable.
